Why is music important?

In a time where children are spending more time in front of the television or computer, music gives them an opportunity to get up, move around and be active.  Music stimulates the brain and can aid in memory and language development.  "There is also a growing body of evidence to suggest that children who are musical at an early age tend to show improved cognitive abilities."1
